XIXth century technique

Since the XIXth century it has been possible to make both the seat and the back of chairs with springs. Here again there are a number of different techniques providing different types of comfort and durability.

The springs are sawn on the jute webbing and held on with hemp

Cocunut vegetal hair used on the back of an armchair and on a chair

The difficulty is to know how to give the appropriate shape with animal hair. Applying animal hair is a very important and delicate operation since it gives the shape and the volume to the seat. It allows to get the expected characteristics required for the following steps.

The stuffing is then stitched with curved needles. The life-expectancy of the stuffing will depend on the number of stitches and the technique used.

The vegetal hair is wrapped in a jute burlap Close-up on stitches (from left to right):
  • Points de fond
  • Point droit
  • Point arrière
  • Point bourrelet
  • Armrest of Pompadour armchair Bean shape arms Stitched inside arms Hand-made stitch of jute burlap on cane

Three different steps on a Louis Philippe chair:
  • stitched stuffing
  • stitches with animal hair
  • Cotton batting
  • Flat backs, « queen » style, on a pair of Jacob armchairs, white batting

The outline of the seat is then drawn. A layer of animal hair is added and covered with cotton batting as pre-covering before placing the fabric. At this stage, the final shape of the seat is visible.
